As the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) commemorates its Independence Day, it is an opportune moment to reflect on the generational change in leadership and the bold actions taken by the current President, Felix Tshisekedi.

Since assuming office in 2019, President Tshisekedi has shown remarkable courage in confronting the Great Lakes prefects, particularly President Kagame of Rwanda, who has long been accused of destabilizing the eastern regions of the Congo.

One of the key characteristics of President Tshisekedi’s tenure has been his willingness to address the challenges that previous Congolese leaders were hesitant to confront.

He has fearlessly taken on President Kagame, engaging in open and public disagreements that have caught the attention of the international community.

During a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), President Felix Tshisekedi delivered a powerful message, asserting the need for a fundamental shift in the way France and Europe engage with African nations.

In a showdown during a joint presser with President Macron, Tshisekedi emphasized the importance of respect and equal partnership between Africa and Europe.

Tshisekedi expressed his discontent with the current approach.

“We must change how we cooperate. The way France and Europe treat us. You must begin to respect us and see Africans in a different way.”

He called for an end to the condescending tone often used when engaging with African countries and demanded fair and equal treatment.

If there is something Tshisekedi is trying to do in DRC is to reignite the spirit of Congo’s independent leader and Pan-African revolutionary Patrice Lumumba, who spoke his maverick mind.

Tshisekedi aims to revive Lumumba’s legacy and emulate his unyielding determination to free Congo.

This is a rare feat, as not many Congolese and regional leaders have been willing to challenge President Kagame and Macron so publicly.

President Tshisekedi’s outspokenness reached a peak when he referred to President Kagame as a ‘blood-thirsty murderer’who needed to be toppled.

Such strong words sent shockwaves throughout the region, challenging the status quo and highlighting President Tshisekedi’s determination to confront the issues head-on.

In a country that has long been fractured by conflict and faced a multitude of challenges, President Tshisekedi has aimed to bring unity to the DRC.

He recognizes the urgency of addressing the protracted conflict in the east, which has caused immense suffering for the Congolese people.

By openly confronting those believed to be contributing to the instability, President Tshisekedi has shown his commitment to fostering peace and stability within the country.

The challenges facing the DRC are vast and complex. From the protracted conflict in the east to issues of governance, corruption, and development, President Tshisekedi inherited a difficult task.

However, his willingness to confront entrenched powers and openly criticize regional leaders accused of destabilizing the country is a positive step toward addressing these challenges.

It is important to recognize that the generational change in leadership brings fresh perspectives and the potential for innovative approaches to governance.

President Tshisekedi’s bold actions and his commitment to addressing the issues that have plagued the DRC for far too long are commendable.

They serve as a beacon of hope for the Congolese people and a reminder that change is possible.

As the DRC celebrates its Independence Day, it is crucial to acknowledge the strides made under President Tshisekedi’s leadership.

While there is still much work to be done, his confrontational approach and determination to bring about positive change offer a glimmer of hope for a better future.

It is a time for the Congolese people to rally behind their leader and support his efforts in building a more united, stable, and prosperous nation.

Happy Independence Day!
