Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has announced his support for Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission’s top position, backing the former Kenyan Prime Minister just months before the election scheduled for February 2025.
Hichilema made the announcement after a bilateral meeting with Kenyan President William Ruto at the COMESA summit in Bujumbura, Burundi.
Ruto, Odinga’s key backer, and Hichilema reached a reciprocal agreement, with Nairobi pledging to endorse Zambia’s nominee, Dr. Samuel Maimbo, for the presidency of the African Development Bank.
Dr. Maimbo, Zambia’s candidate, is aiming to succeed Nigeria’s Akinwumi Adesina in the role.
Hichilema took to social media to confirm his endorsement, stating, “We have committed to support former Kenyan Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, for the position of African Union Commission Chairperson.”
Beyond their shared support, the two leaders also discussed creating a joint trade committee to address trade challenges between Kenya and Zambia.

Zambia Suspends Kenya Airways Flights
Recent tensions had briefly strained relations after Kenya delayed landing rights for a Zambian Airways aircraft, leading Zambia to temporarily ban Kenya Airways from Zambian airspace.
This row was resolved last week, marked by a ceremonial water cannon salute for Zambian Airways upon its return to Nairobi.
Hichilema and Odinga’s alliance is rooted in a shared journey as long-time opposition figures, both vying for presidential office multiple times.
However, unlike Hichilema, who secured Zambia’s presidency after five attempts, Odinga has yet to win the Kenyan presidency despite five campaigns.
